Text Neck In Ottawa

The term “Text Neck” was described by chiropractor Dr. Dean L. Fishman as a repetitive stress injury or an overuse syndrome.

The head is hung or flexed in a forward position and is bent down looking at a mobile or other electronic device for prolonged periods of time.

An average head weighs 10 to 12 pounds, but when it’s in that position it puts about 60 pounds of pressure on the neck.  This causes strain in the muscles of the neck, as well as pulling the vertebrae out of alignment. Over time this causes a number of symptoms.

What Are The Symptoms?

Postural changes can result in pain in the neck and shoulders, headaches, pain in jaw and/or arms/elbows/hands/fingers.

Can Chiropractic Help?

Correcting the posture is important. An adjustment will help address the pain from texting by returning the neck to its proper alignment. What you may not realize is how much your sore neck has affected your entire spine.  I can also give you stretches and exercises to help restore strength and flexibility to the muscles of the neck. Pull your shoulders back and straighten your spine. With correct posture, the weight of the head is supported by the spinal bones instead of pulling against the neck’s stabilizing muscles. Also try to raise the mobile device to your eye level as often as you can.
