Adjusting Techniques

Thompson Technique

D. Dale McCooey, brought both Thompson Technique and Terminal Point Table, developed by J. Clay Thompson, to Canada in 1988. In 1989, Dr. J. Clay Thompson, visited McCooey Chiropractic, and instructed other chiropractors on the technique.

This system of analysis and full spine adjusting provides precise and gentle adjustments to the patient. .

The “Segmental Drop Table” allows ease for patients to gently stand on the hydraulic table. It is then slowly lowered to the horizontal position.  Individual cushions or 'drop pieces,' along the surface of the table support each area of your spine until the adjustment is delivered.  When the adjustment is performed, each drop piece gently gives way, reducing the amount of force/pressure needed to move the specific spinal segment.

Another important feature of the Thompson Technique is the leg length analysis concept. This concept is used to determine imbalance in the leg lengths with the patient lying in a prone position (face down). Leg lengths, palpation,  X-rays and other suitable tests may be used to determine the area to be adjusted.

Stucky Integrated Methods

Dr. Joe Stucky’s  technique combines Gonstead, Thompson, Pettibon and his own techniques thus creating Stucky Integrated Methods.  In 1985, Dr. Dale McCooey was the first to bring this technique to Canada and patients have benefited from it since.  I was fortunate enough to learn directly from Dr. Stucky in Eau Claire WI.

Diversified Adjusting Technique

It is the most common form of adjustment administered in practices throughout the world.  Another “hands on” approach, and it requires the Chiropractor to directly apply gentle pressure to misaligned areas of the body using hands, palms, elbows or other forms as appropriate.

Chiropractic Training

The four year Doctor of Chiropractic program is generally preceded by a 3 year undergraduate university level of basic sciences or a Bachelor degree. Both Canadian and Provincial licensing is required in Ontario.

Chiropractic college students must spend a minimum of at least 4,200 in class hours and a minimum of 1,000 hours of fully supervised clinical training with an instructor.

Continuing Educational Hours

Participating in continuing education activities and maintaining a log of these activities in a professional portfolio is an integral part of striving for excellence. These activities are a requirement and must relate to a member’s clinical practice and/or professional activities, with the goal of enhancing a member’s professional knowledge and skill.
